Lynton Bond

I worked as a mine geologist between 1975 and 1983, including six years on the West Coast of Tasmania, which instilled an appreciation of the natural environment. Work with an exploration company on computerised ore reserves and data recording and presentation, precipitated a move to the Canberra region in 1983, and the purchase of a 20-acre rural residential block in the ACT peri-urban area. Shortly after, my wife and I established a farm tree nursery marketing to others similarly situated on newly-developed lifestyle blocks. The nursery was closed during the 1994 drought when water shortages meant both reduced sales and production.

Landcare became a major component of the now more available spare time, with serving time initially as secretary of Carwoola Landcare (previously Stoney Creek Landcare) and its predecessor since 1994. The group has a focus of conserving and enhancing remnant native vegetation in the peri-urban area.

I have served on the executive committee of the Upper Murrumbidgee Landcare Committee (one of the 12 Landcare networks in the Murrumbidgee Catchment) since 1999, (chair from February 2005 - September 2007), as well as being chair of the Molonglo Catchment Group since its formation in October 2003.   I have been the ACT Community representative on the Australian Landcare Council since July 2005.

I see Landcare as more than just planting trees; I'm committed to involving the broader community in sustainable natural resource management whether it's in the suburban backyard or broadacre agriculture.
