The Australian Government Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government maintains the GrantsLINK website www.grantslink.gov.au which provides lists of funding opportunities offered by the Australian Government.  "GrantsLINK makes it easier to find suitable and relevant grants for your community projects from the many Australian government grants that are available."

Caring for ACT Landscapes

Exercise your imagination!

Do you have a great idea for improving the environment or increasing community understanding about the biodiversity, water and soils of the ACT?

The ACT Natural Resources Management Council wishes to trial new approaches to protecting and enhancing the ACT environment. The Council invites proposals for innovative projects from the community, including community groups, non-government organisations, scientists, students, artists, historians.

Eligible projects could include:

  • Student research
  • Arts activities (painting, writing, photography, theatre, public art)
  • Historical research
  • Workshops or symposia
  • Scoping of philanthropic opportunities for investment in the environment.

No idea will be ruled out – it just has to demonstrate how it will improve the ACT environment and community understanding.

Up to $10,000 is available for each project. Projects need to be completed in 2008.

For further information and application forms contact the ACT NRM Council on 6207 5584 or email john.feint at act.gov.au.

Protect Your Box Gum Grassy Woodland - a smart business decision

Landholders are encouraged to apply for payments from the Australian Government to conserve box gum grassy woodland on their property for up to 15 years.

Under the Caring for our Country initiative, these payments can cover all labour and capital costs involved and any losses from current production on your box gum grassy woodland site.

Box gum grassy woodland provides habitat for at least 19 threatened species, including the superb parrot (pictured), the swift parrot and the tiger quoll.

Less than five per cent remains of this original vegetation and what survives is found among white box, yellow box and blakely’s red gum.

The initial stage of the Box Gum Grassy Woodland Project is now open to landholders within the Lachlan and Murrumbidgee catchments.

If you have at least five hectares of box gum grassy woodland, we would like to hear from you.

To learn more about the Box Gum Grassy Woodland Project, you are invited to attend an information session or guided field walk with the Lachlan and Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authorities.

For further information or to request a site assessment, please contact the Box Gum Grassy Woodland Team at the Lachlan and Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authorities (CMAs) on free call: 1800 239 453  Land managers are asked to submit their Expression of Interest by 19 September.

Whole of Paddock Rehabilitation
It's a WOPR!

Are you a primary producer interested in the production benefits from large scale revegetation?

Do you have a paddock of 10-30 hectares you would like to rest, revegetate and rehabilitate?

Greening Australia’s Whole of Paddock Rehabilitation (WOPR) involves revegetation at the paddock scale, which means no fencing! WOPR integrates conservation and production in a practical, cost-effective and user-friendly program.

What are the benefits?

  • Improved stock performance and reduced mortality through shade and shelter
  • Additional feed source for livestock (Acacia leaves and pods)
  • Potential for increased resistance to internal parasites (worms)
  • Competition for weeds and reduced spread of weed seeds
  • The return of pasture to heavily eroded or saline areas
  • A large habitat block for birds and wildlife

What does WOPR involve?

  • A 5-10 year management agreement

  • A five year rest from grazing; a stewardship payment towards lost production ($125/ha) is paid in years 1 and 5
  • Belts of native trees and shrubs will be direct seeded on the contour with pasture in between
  • After 5 years livestock may be returned to the paddock under a rotational grazing system

For more information or to discuss eligibility contact Graham Fifield or Lori Gould at Greening Australia Capital Region on 6253 3035 or gfifield at act.greeningaustralia.org.au

Whole of Paddock Rehabilitation is being co-funded in the Lachlan Catchment by the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority and as part of the Kosciuszko to Coast program supported by the NSW Department of Environment & Climate Change.

ChemCert training requirements

You do not need to be trained if you only use small quantities of household pesticides as part of your business or work, provided that you do all of the following:

  • you only apply pesticides that are ordinarily used for domestic purposes (e.g. in the home or garden), and
  • are widely available to the general public at retail outlets such as supermarkets, and
  • you apply the pesticide by hand or by using hand-held equipment, and
  • if you use the pesticides outdoors, you use no more than 5 litres/5 kilograms of concentrate or 20 litres/20 kilograms of ready-to-use product, or
  • if you use the pesticides indoors you use no more than 1 litre/1 kilogram of concentrate or 5 litres/5 kilograms of ready-to-use product.

Are you interested in undertaking a ChemCert training course?  If you are, let us know - the Molonglo Catchment Group will consider subsidising training for Landcare Groups and individuals in the Molonglo catchment and, if we get enough interest, organising a course locally. A 50% subsidy on the course will be a great incentive to anyone who does any chemical application other than cutting and dabbing as they are highly likely to use more than 20 litres.

If you would like any further information about Chemcert see www.chemcert.com.au

Landcare CarbonSMART

Landcare CarbonSMART - click to go to the websiteLandcare CarbonSMART has the potential to reward landholders that have revegetated parts of their property by paying them an income for up to 30 years.

It’s estimated that a ten hectare area of trees with mixed species could yield approximately $20,000 over a 30 year period through CarbonSMART. The new program has been launched initially on the ground in NSW, plus a voluntary offset project in Victoria. A scoping study is currently underway in Queensland. Voluntary offset opportunities are anticipated in the future in other States and Territories and landholders are encouraged to send us an Expression of Interest.

Landcare Australia CEO, Brian Scarsbrick, said "We've had a huge response from landholders in regards to CarbonSMART, and right now we especially want to hear from landholders who already have trees in the ground.”

Anyone wanting more information and eligibility requirements should simply or visit the Get Involved page of the Landcare CarbonSMART Website  or call 1800 151 105 to request an Information Pack.
