The
2007 Carwoola Landcare Wildflower Walk was held in late September in
Cuumbeun Nature Reserve (south). This is a few weeks earlier than
usual and there initial concern that it turn into a wildflower hunt
rather than a wildflower walk. It was also in a woodland area,
rather than the more open grassy box woodland of Stony Creek Nature
Reserve Wanna Wanna Rd or Clydesdale Rd where the previous three walks
had been conducted. Whatever else, it was bound to be different
from other walks.
Because of the earliness in the season,
the first things noticeable was that the eggs-and-bacon pea flowers
(Dillwynia, Daviesia, Pultenaea, Bossiaea...) weren't flowering as
in previous years. Instead, we were treated to numerous small orchids:
Cyanicula caerulea and Petalochilus fuscatus.
What was also surprising was that on
moving from the Molonglo River drainage to the Queanbeyan River drainage
with steeper ground and a westerly aspect there were a few different
species such as Hakea decurrens, Stypandra glauca and
Comesperma ericinum only on this side.
Highlights of the walk were the boobook
owl which flew up into a tree not far from our group and stayed watching
us for several minutes, and then finding a solitary leek orchid
tentatively identified as Prasophyllum odoratum.
