Project: Rivercare, Integrated Rehabilitation of Reedy Creek
Reedy Creek Landcare Group
The Reedy Creek sub-catchment covers an area of about
5,000 hectares in the east of the ACT and is part of the Molonglo / Queanbeyan
Catchment. Reedy Creek is the major drainage feature. It rises at the northern
end of the catchment and flows south through a relatively narrow flood plain to
join the Molonglo River near Queanbeyan. All water from the Reedy Creek
catchment enters the Molonglo River via Reedy Creek; into the Murrumbidgee River
and on into the Murray-Darling system.
The Reedy Creek Landcare Group was formed in 1997 following a meeting of all catchment landholders and land managers. Since then, our landcare programs and activities have developed to address the landcarer issues that are considered by the stakeholders to be important and best addressed by a coordinated community based approach.
Integrated Rehabilitation of Reedy Creek, 1998 - 2001
This project proposed to stabilise Reedy Creek to minimise erosion; reduce
silting and nutrient flowing into the Molonglo/Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment;
conserve and restore vegetation along the riparian zone and adjacent land;
improve habitat to encourage biodiversity and restore wildlife corridor along
creek; create wildlife links with Kowen Escarpment bushland and with roadside
conservation zones; improve the water quality along the creek and flowing into
the Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment; improve the productivity of adjacent farming,
grazing and forestry activities; provide visible high impact outcomes to
encourage further community interest and support.
