Purpose of the Plan
The Plan will provide guidance to the Molonglo Catchment Group, land managers
and stakeholders on the management of willows around Lake Burley Griffin and
Molonglo River upstream to the ACT border. It investigates how this can best be
undertaken in a strategic way, consistent with the
Upper Murrumbidgee Willow
Management Strategy and other relevant Plans such as the National Capital Plan.
Recommended management actions draw upon current scientific research, and
on-ground surveying while taking into account cost, land management
responsibilities, relevant legislation, natural and cultural resources and
public interest.
The Plan will lend itself to adaptive management in that it should be
regularly updated as new information to help guide management actions becomes
available and/or as changes arise through implementation of works.
Management Objectives
- To undertake strategic willow control in order to conserve ecologically
significant and diverse ecosystems and habitat within Lake Burley Griffin,
the Molonglo River and surrounding areas, including (in particular) those
areas downstream of the Lake.
- To involve all relevant stakeholders in the development and
implementation of the Plan, and to ensure user needs are not unduly
compromised through management actions. Particular attention will be paid to
public safety, recognising the multiple ways Lake Burley Griffin is used by
the community.
- To undertake regular monitoring and evaluation to ensure management
actions are appropriate and up to date.
- To ensure management options are cost effective.
- To ensure management actions are consistent with regional, state and
national resource management strategies and legislation.
- To accommodate and explore appropriate educational, training, and
research opportunities.
