Past Willow Control
Works
Willow control works in the ACT have been undertaken along all major Lake and
Molonglo River tributaries to varying degrees. A summary of these works is given
each year in the annual ACT Weed Control Program report. Willow control has been
undertaken in earnest across the ACT since 1998.
A brief outline of known works undertaken throughout the ACT tributaries is
as follows:
- An ACT Molonglo River Survey was undertaken in 2001
- All Black willows controlled along the Molonglo River
- Crack willows controlled below Molonglo Gorge
- All pest willows were controlled in Woolshed Creek
- Continued control of willows along Jerrabomberra Creek
- Control and removal of willows on Defence properties
- Follow up willow control programs have been undertaken to varying
degrees.
These works have been undertaken by different organizations with the main
ones being CUPP and
Environment ACT in conjunction with community groups.

Recommendation 26:
|
Various works have also been undertaken in NSW along Reedy Creek and
the Queanbeyan and Molonglo Rivers. An inventory of works undertaken
across the entire Lake Catchment would be useful to assist with the Lake
Burley Griffin Willow control strategy, and an integrated approach would
demonstrate a good investment of public funding. |
Community Consultation
While the feedback as part of the development of the LBG Willow Management
Plan was generally positive, past experiences with some willow control projects
in the ACT have attracted criticism. It is vital that prior to any willow
control work being undertaken, significant time and effort is invested ensuring
that any affected group is made aware of proposed actions, and more general
consultation with the broader community is undertaken. Lake Burley Griffin has a
wide range of uses and a very high public profile. As mentioned earlier, there
was very little interest from the general public in attending the forums
organized specifically for the development of this Plan, however this should not
be taken to mean that there would be little interest in a willow control program
around the Lake. It has been the case in the past that once works have begun
public interest is stimulated.
|
Recommendation 27:
|
Public interest in a willow control program needs to be pre-empted
and planned for. A more general education program should also be
undertaken (as part of a broader strategy) to increase awareness about
willows and their management. |
There is a Lake Users Forum coordinated by the NCA that provides a means of
communicating with many Lake user groups (but not all groups), along with the
general media, postings at notice board areas around the Lake (including the
Visitor Information Centre) and individual consultation with land managers.
